A company called Tome Software is about to begin developing a project that uses AI to reduce the number of bike accidents. This is not a typical use of AI. Much of the work in the field of machine learning is focused on things such as intelligent home integration, automated cars, Facebook bots and applications that facilitate travel or check the weather forecast.
A bicycle in general is something that we take for granted. It is widespread, but a bit overlooked when it comes to accidents.
The company will begin by testing real bicyclists using Trek bikes. She plans to focus on the most common type of accident – the car rides a bicycle from the side or from behind. The company will create a system that can alert both the cyclist and the driver that the bicycle is in one of these hazardous areas.
It is here that machine learning takes place. The AI will consider factors such as the time of day (even the bright sun at dawn) and the characteristics of the road such as speed limits.
